May Day 2009: Read Us Loud & Clear

While The Economist asks “Could This Be The Year For Immigration Reform? a movement stronger than ever will commence May Day Rallies for immigrant and workers rights will be held on May 1st at Union Square Park at Noon with the May 1st Coalition (related article in the Indypendent),  The New York Immigrant Coalition rally will begin at 1:30pm in Madison Square Park, and the National Mobilization Against Sweatshops will gather at 2pm in Roosevelt Park in Chinatown.

In Our Hands Is Placed a Power: 
A May Day celebration of labor firebrands in story and song 
Dramatic eyewitness accounts, original newspaper records and folk music bring to life the history of workingclass heroes from the 1886 fight for the 8-hour day to the “Bread and Roses” rebellion of immigrant women textile workers to today’s battling Stella D’oro Bronx cookie factory strikers.

A “Feast of Many Lands” Buffet will be served at 6:00pm for a $9 donation.  Door donation is $3.  The event will be held at Freedom Hall, 113 West 128th St., Harlem (between Malcolm X Blvd./Lenox Ave. and 7th Ave., subways 2 or 3; 4, 5 or 6 to 125th St.). Childcare will be provided. The event is sponsored by the Freedom Socialist Party.
